Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

Your beliefs can limit you in more ways than one—including your ability to overcome addiction. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) identifies and challenges the irrational beliefs that fuel substance abuse. REBT replaces these irrational beliefs with healthy ones, guiding you toward recovery and a more balanced life.

What is Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)?

While similar, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) precedes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Created in the 1950s by Dr. Albert Ellis, this type of therapy was created as a way to balance out individuals’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. In turn, many believe that REBT laid the foundations for CBT.

Essentially, REBT involves replacing irrational thoughts or beliefs with rational and healthy ones. It’s based on the theory that emotional dysregulation results from these irrational beliefs. In other words, suffering and pain are due to an individual’s interpretation of events—not the events themselves. Through REBT, you can reduce self-sabotage, let go of negative emotions, and progress forward in your recovery journey.

REBT incorporates the ABC model of cognitive restructuring. This involves:

A: The activating event that triggers a reaction or action.

B: The belief about the activating event.

C: The consequence (emotional or behavioral response) to the belief about the event.

With REBT, you and your therapist focus on identifying “B”—or irrational beliefs—and replacing them. As a result, this changes “C”—the consequence or outcome.

At Freedom Recovery Centers (FRC), our team is here to help you finally regain control of your life. We understand that it takes courage to reach out for help. But once you do, our team will help you through every step and equip you with the tools and resources you need for lasting recovery. As such, your personalized treatment plan may include REBT—helping you finally untangle yourself from the beliefs that are holding you back.

With REBT, you’ll be able to:

  • Identify and challenge irrational beliefs that are contributing to your addiction.
  • Learn and practice self-acceptance without judgment.
  • Discover constructive and rational ways to cope and address cravings.
  • Pave your way to sustained recovery, reducing your risk of relapse.

Recovery is within your grasp. Alongside REBT, your FRC treatment plan may include CBT, our 12-step facilitation therapies, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, group therapy, life skills development, and more. At FRC, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Each treatment plan is unique to each patient’s needs and situation.

Benefits of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) for Addiction Recovery

With REBT, you can let go of beliefs that aren’t serving you or your recovery. This type of therapy empowers you to take control and gives way to many benefits, including:

Better Emotional Regulation

REBT teaches you to respond rationally to events rather than letting your thoughts get carried away by irrational beliefs. This can lead to reduced overwhelm and stress, as well as increased emotional resilience.

Improved Coping Skills

In the initial stages of recovery, cravings can feel all-consuming. They can also lead to relapses and setbacks. With REBT, you learn how to better manage your stress and triggers—reacting in a rational way that supports your recovery.

Enhanced Self-Awareness

Without proper support, it can be difficult to pinpoint why the cycle of substance abuse keeps occurring. With a better understanding of your thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and behaviors, you gain greater self-awareness and can break the cycle.

Lasting Behavioral Change

Irrational beliefs frequently lead to destructive behaviors that hinder the recovery process. By laying healthier foundations, you can finally begin to make real progress and work your way toward lasting change.

FAQs

What are the 3 main beliefs of REBT?

The three main beliefs of REBT are:

  1. Unconditional acceptance of the self.
  2. Unconditional acceptance of others.
  3. Unconditional acceptance of our lives.

This helps you understand what’s within your control and what’s not, allowing you to let go of things you can’t control.

Who is REBT not recommended for?

REBT may not be suitable for everyone. For instance, it isn’t considered effective for individuals with addiction and specific co-existing disorders, including schizophrenia, personality disorder, or a severe psychological disorder.

What is the difference between CBT and REBT?

REBT is different from CBT in that it focuses on letting go of irrational beliefs and replacing them with rational ones. CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), on the other hand, focuses more on the connection between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Is REBT effective?

For many individuals with substance abuse disorder, REBT is very effective, with many people reporting better functioning and easier recovery.
