What is Drug Rehab?
Drug rehabilitation is a structured treatment program designed to help individuals overcome substance use disorders. It provides a supportive environment where people can address the physical, psychological, and social aspects of addiction under professional care.

Rehab programs vary in intensity, duration, and approach, but they all share the common goal of helping participants achieve sobriety and develop the skills needed for long-term recovery.
These programs, such as those offered at Freedom Recovery Centers (FRC), are tailored to meet individual needs. And it’s not just about getting clean. Rehab also addresses the underlying issues that contribute to addiction and teaches life-long healthy coping mechanisms that apply in situations beyond drug use or triggers.
What Are the Steps Usually Involved in the Treatment of Drug Abuse?
Treatment for drug addictions typically involves similar steps, with treatment programs designed for individual needs. Usually, drug rehab involves:
- Detoxification: This initial phase, if needed, involves ridding the body of the abused substance under 24/7 medical supervision.
- Evidence-based therapies: Depending on your needs, various therapies will be included in your program. These may include talk therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. You will also receive treatment for any co-occurring conditions, such as depression or anxiety.
- Holistics: Holistic therapies help reinstate the mind-body connection, as well as help you reflect and find purpose and meaning. These may include meditation, health and wellness activities, art therapy, yoga, and more.
- Aftercare: Each drug rehab program involves relapse prevention strategies as well as referrals to counselors, resources, and support groups.

A Day in Rehab
Residential rehab involves staying in a rehab center with a structured routine involving various therapy sessions and activities. While there is some personal time between sessions, a large portion of the day goes toward recovery and treatment.
Here is what a typical day may look like:
- 7:00 am: A healthy and nutritious breakfast
- 8:00 am: Meditation
- 8:30 am: Physical activity class/training
- 10:00 am - 12:00 pm: Group Sessions
- 12:00 pm: Nutritious lunch
- 1:00 - 4:00 pm: Individual/One-on-One Therapy Sessions, Specialized Sessions
- 4:00 pm: Group Session/Activity
- 5:00 pm: Dinner
- 6:30 pm: 12-step recovery meeting
- 7:30 pm: Personal time/reflection
- 10:00 pm: Bedtime
Most days will follow this schedule with some variations. Some days may incorporate different types of therapy or there may be special workshops or activities. For instance, family visitation may be a special event. Family therapy is also unlikely be a daily event.

How Long Do Rehab Programs Last?
Rehab programs vary in length depending on individual needs and the severity of addiction. Several common program durations include:
- Short-term programs (typically last 28-30 days)
- 60-day programs
- 90-day programs
- Extended-care programs (lasting 6-12 months)
Evidence shows that longer treatment durations correlate with higher success rates, which is why typically at least 90-day programs are recommended.
It’s further important to remember that recovery doesn’t end when your rehab program concludes. Many individuals continue with outpatient therapy, support groups, and aftercare services for months or years after completing rehab.
