With access to the right resources and care, recovery is possible. Whether you’re just starting recovery, helping someone you love, or staying strong in your sobriety, Richmond offers various support and resources to help you every step of the way.

As members of the Richmond community, the Freedom Recovery Centers (FRC) team is dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by substance use disorders with compassion, dignity, and evidence-based care. We understand how challenging the cycle of addiction can be—but you don’t need to face it alone.

For Crisis and Immediate Help

If you or someone you love is in crisis and in need of help right now, use the following resources. If someone has overdosed or is facing a medical emergency, immediately call 911 to ensure help is on the way. Outside of this, the following resources provide 24/7 support.

Virginia 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

Talk to someone right away by calling or texting 988. Counselors offer free and confidential calls for mental health issues, substance use crises, and emotional distress. Sometimes, we all just need someone to listen and guide us.

RBHA Emergency Services (Richmond Behavioral Health Authority)

RBHA is the public agency in charge of providing mental health, substance use, prevention, and developmental services to people living in the City of Richmond. However, they also provide a crisis hotline, 804-819-4100, which you’re urged to call in the midst of emotional and substance abuse turmoil.

For Peer Support & Recovery Groups

Doing things alone makes it that much harder. The truth is we go much farther when working together and supporting one another. Support groups can provide connection and emotional and mental support when you need it the most.

Alcoholics Anonymous (Richmond Intergroup)

Alcoholics Anonymous offers AA meetings at scheduled times throughout the Richmond area. The only requirement for joining is the desire to stop drinking. You’ll meet others who have been or are going through similar situations to your own.

Richmond Intergroup is a non-profit organization that manages the region’s meet-up directories, distributes AA literature, and maintains the current AA website for Richmond, Virginia.

SMART Recovery Meetings

SMART Recovery meetings (Self-Management and Recovery Training) offer an alternative to 12-step programs focusing on self-empowerment and self-reliance. Meetings help participants develop skills to manage cravings, build motivation, and create balanced lifestyles. In fact, we offer this as part of our treatment programs at FRC.

For Family Support

It can be very difficult to watch a loved one struggle through the chains of addiction. And sometimes, those on the sidelines need help, too. Here are support groups and resources you can turn to in those times of need.

Al-Anon

This includes support meetings for family and friends of people with alcohol use disorders. Al-Anon helps family members understand that they didn’t cause their loved one’s addiction and provides tools for healthy boundaries and self-care.

SAARA

SAARA is a non-profit group advocating for those suffering from addiction in Virginia. They offer education, advocacy, trainings, and events all dedicated to transforming addiction treatment in the state.
