Does Virginia Medicaid Cover Drug Rehab?

‍One of the main reasons individuals refuse or don’t consider getting help for their addiction is the financial obligations involved in rehab. Even without substance use, finances can bring about varying levels of stress. ‍Luckily, insurance can provide financial assistance—especially when you need it the most. But does Virginia Medicaid cover drug rehab? How does this work?

In short, Virginia Medicaid will cover drug rehab, but exact coverage will vary depending on your specific plan. At Freedom Recovery Centers (FRC), we understand the importance of figuring out your insurance coverage and finances before entering treatment. After all, during rehab, you’ll want to be able to focus fully on your recovery—not worrying about how you’ll pay for treatment. Below, we offer information regarding Virginia Medicaid, ensuring you can make an informed decision regarding your rehab choices.

What is Medicaid?

Medicaid is a government-funded health insurance program1. It provides insurance for individuals below certain income levels. Yet, because it’s a joint federal and state venture, each state determines exact eligibility and coverage.

Since 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) required that insurance companies provide coverage for mental health conditions and substance use disorders2. This means that most Medicaid insurance must offer some kind of benefits when it comes to addiction treatment. But, again, exact coverage varies by state and plan.

Services Covered By Virginia Medicaid

In Virginia, Medicaid coverage is offered through the state’s Addiction and Recovery Treatment Services (ARTS), providing treatment for individuals in the state struggling with addiction. At FRC, we currently accept Medicaid but not every plan, which is why it’s important to check your individual policy3

Medicaid may help cover treatment services, such as:

Detox

For many substance use disorders, detox is considered medically necessary. This means most insurance providers, including Medicaid, will cover this initial phase. Detoxification involves ridding the body of the abused substance and laying the foundations for recovery.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

This outpatient program doesn’t require in-facility stays. However, it still involves intense therapy with multiple sessions per week. Many outpatient programs are covered by Medicaid but may include certain limits, such as a set number of sessions.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

With PHP, you get to live within the comfort of your own home. You’ll attend treatment during the day while being able to return home in the evening. In terms of Medicaid covering PHP, this is similar to IOP where there is often a limit on the number of sessions.

Residential Rehab

This involves staying in a hospital or center and receiving round-the-clock care and treatment. This is considered the best option for severe addiction. This type of treatment is typically covered by Medicaid in some shape or form. However, it often requires approval beforehand.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

This includes medications like methadone or buprenorphine, which help guide recovery. Many medications help alleviate withdrawal symptoms and cravings and reduce health risks. In many cases, Medicaid will cover these treatments, but pre-authorization is usually necessary.

Therapy or Counseling

These are typically covered partially by Medicaid as they also fall under behavior therapies for mental health issues.

Inpatient Rehab Yes Coverage depends on medical necessity.
Outpatient Treatment Yes Includes therapy and counseling sessions.
Detox Services Yes Covers medically supervised detox programs.
